What do you do when it’s super hot outside?

How do you help your backyard chicken flock get through that summer heat?
There are a couple of things you can do…
You can get packs of electrolytes and put that in their water

That will help them keep the electrolytes up in their system to help them get through the heat
That will help them get through the heat.
This goes in the water also.
This is my preferred method.
Another thing that you can do is create ice blocks.

Get any kind of food storage container, put water in it, and freeze it yourself.
You just need to make sure the sides are fairly straight so that when you go to pop the ice block out, it’ll come out easily.
I sometimes give them two a day. It depends on the temperature.
I might give them one in the morning and another one in the afternoon.
I watch the temperature outside and decide when they need one.
Typically chickens are good until 85 degrees.

After 85 degrees is when they start to have trouble.
So watch the temperature of the day.
Here in the desert where it gets really hot really fast, a lot of times I’ll give them one at about 10 in the morning and give them another after lunch, sometime early afternoon.
Another idea is …
Since the girls like berries, I’ll use the berries as a lure to get them to take something cold.
I’ll mix up cold tea with the Lemon Zing Tonic in it

or
Since they like flavored water with berries, I’ll take a bowl, chop up the berries, mix up tea for them with the tonic in it and I’ll give them that as a treat.

And that will help them take the tonic,
But it’s also cold because you can have some of the fruit fresh and some of the fruit frozen
The fruit gets them to drink the tonic and eat the cold fruit
Another idea outside of cold treats is…
I’ve got sand in my run,
So I can hose it down with water to soak it and get it all wet

That keeps the sand cooler.
The run also has a ton of shade in there,
So the cold wet sand in the shade helps them stay cool.
I thought I’d give you some summer tips to help your flock make it through the summer heat.
Mine are doing pretty good this year.

We’ve only lost one hen to the heat this year.
Last year I think I lost two or three.
I hope that these tips help you with your backyard flock, and I’ll talk to you soon.
