Black Soldier Fly Larvae…why all the interest? ?
They’re high in protein

They have a bunch of essential minerals
They’ve also got calcium for strong eggshells, 50X the calcium of mealworms, because the shell of the body on the flies is intact. ?
According to Grubby Farms website…
“Grubblies are more beneficial for chickens than ordinary mealworms, and provide the nutrients and minerals necessary to promote healthy feather growth, high-quality eggshells, and happy, energetic flocks.”
They’re a great treat if you don’t let your chickens free range like I don’t.

So I tend to throw down protein treats for them so that they still get their protein, since they don’t get too many bugs and insects naturally. ?
I go ahead and give them protein treats to make up for that.
Now, the black soldier flies…
You can breed them if you want.
They consume organic waste, so it works great with composting

They will help to compost your leftover fruits and vegetables
?
?They’re a good organism to work with your composting program.
I don’t have enough room where I’ve got my compost set up to get into breeding them myself
So I buy them…way easier for me.
And a lot of people don’t want to get into the breeding program, so that’s okay.
You can buy them already done.
The product that I purchase is called Grubblies.
It’s out of Georgia
You can buy a one pound pack, or a five pound tub.
I started with the smaller packs to make sure the girls liked it
But now that I know they do, it’s more economical to get the five pound tub.
There’s a replacement bag that fits in the big tub.
So this is what the black soldier fly larvae looks like
They’re very dry.
They feel similar to the mealworms as far as you touching them and grabbing them.
They smell pretty good, actually. I don’t mind the smell at all.
The girls know what the tub looks like and start to gather around as I walk out with it
I just scatter them all around out in the run so that the different little cliquey groups of ladies don’t fight too much.
Black Soldier Fly Larvae is a great protein treat for your flock.

You can either grow them yourself or you can buy them all already to go similar to the way you would mealworms.
I hope this tip was helpful, until next time, find some great Grubblies for your flock to try and let them dream a little!
