How much space do you need for your flock? ?
Inside the coop, you really need 2-3 square feet per bird
That will give them enough room to be able to move around
And to not really get in each other’s way
Out in the run, you need a good 8-10 square feet per bird
They need enough room to get away from each other during the day
If they are too confined, then you start to see issues
And there’s one more place you need space consideration…
Your roosting bars ?
Your roosting area you need 8-10 inches per bird, depending on the size of the bird
8 inches is for the smaller breeds
10 inches is for larger breeds
You need these three measurements to make sure your flock has enough space to get along
We don’t let them free range here because we have too many predators

You need to take that into account when you’re designing the size of your hen house
And how many hens you should get

Because if you have too many hens for the space that you’ve got…
That creates stress in the flock ?
That’s where the pecking comes from
They pick on each other, it could start fights
It’s just not really good for them
So, when you’re planning your hen house, definitely take it all into consideration
Make sure that you plan it big enough
Also consider the fact that you’ll probably end up with more chickens than you planned on
You’re always going to find an egg color that you want ?
Or a breed that you want

Or you just like getting the chicks, because they’re fun when they’re little

So, definitely make sure you allow room for a few more
Especially if you’re counting on the eggs
As the chickens age, you need space in your hen house to bring in some younger ones so that you can keep the egg production going for your family
Keep all that in mind and plan your hen house.
