Chicken breeds … there are so many
And that’s what leads to Chicken Math!
There are two main categories of breeds of chickens…
Meat birds
Layer Hens
I don’t personally have any meat birds
These are the breeds raised for meat
A couple of the common breeds for meat birds are Cornish and Red Ranger
Layer hens are the breeds that people have for laying eggs
That’s what I have
Within the layer hens, there’s a group that are referred to as dual purpose
They are good for both laying eggs and as meat because they have enough meat on their bones
There are other breeds of chickens that just are scrawny
They’re good for laying eggs, they’re prolific layers even
But they just don’t have a lot of meat on their bones, so they’re not considered dual breeds
What are some of the common layer hen breeds?

All of these breeds are very friendly and good consistent layers :
? Australorps are a very common layer hen, the Australian version of the Orpington
? Orpington are named after the town of Orpington in England are very friendly
? Speckled Sussex, the breed got its name because it looks like they’ve got painted specks all over their feathers.
? Wyandotte, named after the Wyandot people who developed the breed, matures rapidly
? Brahmas are one of the largest breeds, they grow slower, they start to lay later

You can find these common breeds at a hatchery and from backyard breeders

There are some fancier breeds…
? Barnevelder is a Dutch breed names for the town Barneveld in the Netherlands
? Marans get rather large and are named after the town of Marans in France
? Swedish Flower Hen is newly imported from Sweden to the US as recent as 2010
? Isbar. also called Silverudd Blues, lay green eggs and are from Sweden
These are some of the fancier breeds that you can easily find in the US

There are plenty of different breeds to choose from if you’re looking into starting a flock of your own
70+ breeds are in the US, some not recognized by the Poultry Standards
Do some research and know that chicken math is real!
