Vacation time!! ?
Let’s say you’ve got a flock
But you want to go away for a week, or a few days ?
You want to take a trip somewhere that means being gone away from your homestead
What do you do about handling your flock? ?
There’s a couple of things you can do…
You can always get a big, oversized feeder ???
You can do that so that there’s plenty of feed for them while you’re gone
I’ve got treadle feeders, so what’s a treadle feeder?
The chickens have to step on the treadle (foot step) to open it to get to the feed
That keeps the feed away from the mice who don’t weight enough to be able to do that even if they could figure out how
I’ve got three of those that hold 20 pound each
So I can fill all three and they’ll be good to go, even if I’m gone for a week
That’s more than enough food for them for the week
For water, you need a very large waterer ???
Or have an installed one that is hooked up to the house
I have two water systems connected to the house water
This way, I don’t have to worry about them running out of water
I just check it once a day to make sure it’s working properly
But that’s not enough
You can’t just leave with food and water
You need to have somebody come and at least check on them every day?
Make sure that the food is still there and good and hasn’t been dumped
Make sure that the water, even if it’s a water system like mine, make sure it’s still working
If it’s a manual water system, it might need to be refilled
So you need somebody to come and check on them every day ?? ??
Another idea is to have a security system ?
There are WiFi cameras with sound which you can bring up on your phone to check on the flock This is great even when you are home!
But especially great when you are away
I installed 2 cameras, one in the run and the other in the coop, when I was working
I could check on them throughout the day and make sure everybody was okay
Now I use it when we go on vacation ?
Your pet sitter or livestock sitter is only going to be able to check on them once or twice a day This enables me to watch things through the camera, and if I see something that needs looking at, I can contact the pet sitter and say, “Hey, this is what I’m seeing in the camera. You mind running over there and checking out whatever it is?”
Those are some things to keep in mind if you need to go on vacation. ?
Make sure that you can put out enough water and food for them to make it from pet sitter visit to pet sitter visit
You definitely need a pet sitter because you need somebody to check on everything
You need them to collect the eggs, check if the food and water is doing okay and staying clean,
And it’s a good idea, if you can, to put in a security camera so that you can check on things when the pet sitter isn’t around
Consider these tips when planning vacation time while owning a flock
So you can relax and enjoy your time away ?
