What are blood spots or meat spots that you might see in backyard eggs? ?
And is it okay to eat these eggs?
A blood spot is a ruptured blood vessel that happened during the egg laying process
A meat spot is similar, it is a piece of tissue that is sloughing off from the intestine or somewhere, that ends up inside the shell as the egg is formed ?
Now neither one of these mean that the egg is fertile
They are perfectly fine to eat ?
I wanted to show you what it looks like, so you see that, this is a meat spot
It’s like a little piece of tissue, and you can dig it out and then use the egg
The easiest way to dig it out actually is with the shell
The shell will attract the meat spot

Why do you not see this when you but eggs from the grocery store? ?
That’s because the grocery stores do what’s called candling for perfection
They take the egg before it’s cracked and they shine a flash light kind of thing
It’s called a candler. to shine light through the egg as the egg is still whole
You can see what’s inside ?
That’s also how they tell if an egg is fertile or not
If it’s fertile, you can see the chick growing
But you could see the meat spots and the blood spots through that as well
The eggs that are created commercially, that go to the grocery stores…
The commercial growers candle the eggs

They only send the perfect ones to the grocery store ?
They destroy the ones that have the meat spots or blood spots in them
But there’s nothing wrong with them from backyard producers
They’re perfectly normal
You can remove the blood spot or the meat spot, and then go ahead and use the egg as you usually would
