Chicken saddles or chicken aprons… ?
What is that?
If you’ve got roosters ?
When they are mating their hens, they tug at the feathers on the back
Or scratch at them with their feet, and it will strip the feathers
It could pull them out
And if it gets down to the skin, then they could actually cut the skin and cause open sores
If you don’t have a rooster, like I don’t…
Sometimes you have a dominant hen that is trying to control the flock
And she will act similar to a rooster
When somebody misbehaves, she will jump on their back and scratch at their back in a similar way
What the saddle or apron does is it protects the back ?
So that while they go through that behavior, it won’t break the skin
The fabric will get scratched instead of scratching the back of the hen
It’s a good idea to have several on hand in case you need them ?
You can find patterns online if you want to make them yourself
Or you can do a search and buy some already made
If you were wondering why some of your hens back feathers look torn, this could be what’s happening
So keep a couple of saddles on hand
