Bullying in the hen house?
Bullying within your flock
If you’ve got a bully in your flock
And it’s obvious who the victim is because you can see the pulled feathers
Hopefully they’re not drawing blood
If the victim does have a wound remove her from the flock for treatment
Other than being wounded, the victim isn’t the one that you want to pull out and remove from the situation
She’s already on the low end of the pecking order because she’s getting picked on
If you can isolate who is doing the bullying
Or at least who is running the show of the bullying
There could be multiple hens picking on the victim
But there will be one hen that is in control of the situation and what’s going on
If you can figure out who that hen is
That’s who you want to pull out of the flock
You pull her out and take her away
So that the flock can’t see her and she can’t see the flock
Keep her away for a few days
That will remove her from the pecking order
She won’t be top hen anymore
Then when you go to reintroduce her, she’ll be lower in the pecking order
And hopefully that’ll stop the bullying
If you’re worried about reintroducing her by herself after she’s been out a few days
Take one of your docile hens that she gets along with
And put her in the cage or crate with the bully hen
So that you can reintroduce them back in the flock together
If that doesn’t work and she starts bullying the low pecking order hen again
Then take her out for a little longer and then re-introduce her to the flock
Keep in mind that as much as you’ll want to comfort the victim,
You really need to remove the bully instead
