I get my chicken feed from a local buying group
Because none of the tack stores in this area carry the particular feed I want
And after my research ?️ it was the one that I really wanted, based on the ingredients
We have to buy 2 months at a time for the order to be large enough to ship
This feed is brought down from Montana

I use Big Sky Layer Mash
I keep it in the storage area of the henhouse.
No matter what feed I looked at, there wasn’t one that had 100 percent of everything I wanted… after lots of research.
So I mix some additional things into my feed for the chickens. ?
I keep the feed in a rodent-proof barrel so that I don’t have to worry about the mice getting into it. ?
The barrel holds two 50-pound feed bags.
What do I add to the feed?
… a bucket of sea kelp ?
… a jar of Brewer’s yeast with garlic powder
… a jar of probios
… some extra calendula flowers

… a bag of catnip
The first thing I do is put in about five scoops of feed into the barrel ? ? ? ? ?
I use a regular 3qt feed scoop from the tack store.
For the added ingredients I use a 1/4 cup scoop
(you can buy scoops in different sizes)
I use the ¼ cup scoop because then I don’t have to measure, I can just count scoops
So for every four or five scoops of feed, I put in one ¼ cup scoop each of the sea kelp, Brewer’s yeast with garlic, probios, and the catnip. ?
And then I take a good handful, not so measured, but a good handful of the calendula petals.
And then I just mix that in, and I keep doing that for every five scoops or so of feed until the bag is gone.
You might be wondering why I do catnip and Brewer’s yeast with garlic
Those actually help with parasites.

From the inside out.
It prevents them a lot easier.
This gives me the perfect feed mixture that I prefer to feed the girls
That’s what I do to get feed together
I just use it out of the blue barrel until it’s empty
And then I’ll mix the next two bags
Research your organic feed options.

See if you’ve got a bulk buying group in your area that you can use to save some money
If you can’t find the perfect feed based on the ingredients that you want, you can always add stuff into it like I do.
