What is the life span of a chicken? ?

There’s two different groups of chickens…
? Meat birds live about 6-8 weeks before they are killed to be put in the freezer
That is because if they get too large and too heavy their organs can’t handle sustaining life
And they tend to just die naturally anyway when that happens
So, they are usually killed at six to eight weeks for grocery stores
Even backyard meat bird raisers do it this way

? The other group … layer birds…
If you have layer birds for eggs, then those live 5 to 10 years
The longest one on record is 16 years old, but 5-10 years is average
Most of them live about 8 years

So, when planning your flock, planning your hen house … take the lifespan into consideration.

Make sure you allow for enough room for the young ones as well as the older chickens. ?
